Encryption and Security

Secure Encryption Key

BackOnline data is completely secure due to our encryption key technology.

Each BackOnline installation receives an encryption key. The key resides on your computer, known only to you. As an added security measure, we never transmit your encryption key across the network. Even our system administrators are unable to decrypt and view the content of your files stored on the BackOnline Remote servers.

Flawless Encryption Algorithm

Our encryption algorithm is one of five Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) finalists chosen by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Withstanding frequent public reviews, the 256-bit Twofish algorithm is a block cipher designed by Counterpane Labs. To date, no known attack against this algorithm has been reported.

Restricted Access to Data by IP Address*

Additional security is available with the validation of IP addresses. Even with correct usernames and passwords, if the IP address issuing a request to BackOnline does not match an address on the client security details, access to your backup files will be denied.

Continuous Data Protection*

Providing a highly dependable means of real-time data protection for servers, desktops, and laptops, BackOnline works without human intervention. All possibilities of negligence-induced problems are avoided because the backup process is completely automated. Our advanced continuous data protection (CDP) technology captures every version of the files saved to your hard drive. CDP sustains the integrity of your data even in the event of a hard drive crash.

You can choose CDP implementation for a single file or the entire hard drive. To reduce data storage requirements, BackOnline allows the user to set a minimum update interval. Encryption and Security Diagrams Secure 256-bit SSL communication To prevent eavesdropping and enhance security, all communications between BackOnline server and your computer are transported in a 256-bit SSL (Secure Socket Layer) channel. (Caption for graphic: Authentication parameters and encrypted files experience additional encryption within a SSL channel.) Securely encrypted backup data All files are zipped and encrypted with a user-defined encryption key before transmission. The BackOnline server contains data unintelligible to anyone but the encryption key holder.
